Albert King discovered her at her 14.
Signed at [l=Stax Records during the mid-1970s, she had her biggest hit in 1974 with Woman To Woman (a country hit in 1978, covered by Barbara Mandrell).
Since then, she has recorded for several labels, like [l=Fantasy WMOT Records, [l=Arista, [l=Soundtown before settling at [l=Malaco Records in 1989.

One of 1974's really great soul records was undoubtedly Shirley Brown's "Woman To Woman," the million selling single that launched Stax' new Truth label and that also put deep soul high into the pop charts for perhaps the only time during the whole of the year.
