To the Member of The Soul Music Community (TSMC):

Here are the top 10 Hall of Fame nominations for Contemporary Soul Music Artist/Group Or Duo:

1. MARIAH CAREY
2. R. KELLY
3. BOYZ II MEN
4. MARY J. BLIGE
5. TONI BRAXTON
6. JOE
7. USHER
8. MONICA
9. ALICIA KEYS
10. BEYONCE

Of the 10 categories in the SoulMusic Hall of Fame, this one has proven to be a major problem. Anytime you have a Hall of Fame where Eric Benet can get inducted before James Brown, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE!!

The problem with this category is NOT the artists themselves; Jill Scott, Lalah Hathaway & Mint Condition are some of the best R&B artists of the past 20 years. But the problem is its much too soon to reward these artists with an induction, while some of Soul music’s pioneering giants haven’t gotten in yet.

Case in point: your recent inductee, Maysa Leak. Yes, she is a fine singer who deserves to be recognized for her talent, and if the website had created a “Contemporary Soul Award” for these artists, she should be one of the recipients. But a Hall of Fame induction?? Look at the Soul icons she’s beaten for this honor; Roberta Flack, Candi Staton, Patti LaBelle, Betty Wright, Melba Moore, Deniece Williams… the singers who actually opened the doors for her. It’s unfortunate, but in this case, the student got inducted before the teachers who educated her.

Another headache with this category is how the Members seem to favor only Neo-Soul and Smooth Jazz artists, while ignoring R&B acts who happen to enjoy crossover success in other genres. Say what you want about Mariah Carey, but she was first & foremost a Soul singer when she began in 1990 before her success landed her in the pop charts. And Mary J. Blige also started in R&B before she merged her style with Hip-Hop, which also gave her pop fame. Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton & Alicia Keys (how could the members forget her?) also had lots of pop hits. There’s no reason for the Members to punish these singers for achieving pop success because it doesn’t make you a lesser Soul artist. Aretha Franklin has had many hits on the pop charts; does that disqualify her as the Queen of Soul?

The Contemporary category has been both a blessing and a curse for the Hall of Fame. While it has rewarded several great Neo-Soul artists, it was simply poorly-timed for this list to be initiated in the first place. And if the Members don’t do a much better job in the other categories, many more Neo-Soul singers will continue to get inducted over the legends who actually taught them how to sing!!

@jogamble You’re only half-right. You said these nominees “haven’t earned their place” here, & that its “TOO SOON”. Guess what? THE SAME CAN ALSO BE SAID FOR ALL THE ARTISTS THEY INDUCTED IN THIS WHOLE CATEGORY!! You also said these artists “are Hip-Hop and not R&B”. WRONG!! Although they’ve collaborated within the Hip-Hop genre, these artists are not rappers. They are singers. They actually sing!! And even if they are often labeled as Hip-Hop, SO WHAT? It’s obvious the members don’t have a problem voting for JAZZ singers. If the members don’t care about the rules regarding jazz, why should Soul singers aligned with Hip-Hop be treated different? Also, it’s really silly of you to say that some of these artists are “barely old enough”. ARE YOU SERIOUS? So what’s the age requirement for being inducted, huh?
